GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AND LOW IMPACT DESIGN WORKSHOPS Green Infrastructure is our Nation’s natural life support system – a strategically planned and managed interconnected network of green spaces including: conserved natural areas and features such as wetlands, woodlands, waterways and wildlife habitats; public and private conservation areas such as nature preserves, landscape linkages, wildlife corridors and wilderness areas; private working lands of conservation value such as forests, farms and ranches; and other protected open spaces such as greenways, parks, and cultural and historic resources. In partnership with the National Park Service and the Potomac River Navigator, Friends of the Potomac is working to assist communities in their efforts to implement green infrastructure and low impact techniques. Over the following year, Friends and the National Park Service-National Capital Region will organize, develop, and implement four regional green infrastructure workshops within the watershed. The workshops will focus on each region within the basin: the upper, middle, and lower Potomac watershed. The purpose of these meetings was to provide communities with the opportunity to help in identifying ways that the planning for trail can assist with local and regional interpretive programs and projects. Workshops were held in Fredericksburg, VA, Fairfax County, VA, and La Plata, Maryland. Friends of the Potomac will use the results of each meeting to produce a draft interpretive plan. In addition to the workshops, Friends will coordinate the production of a poster, which will be graphic representation of the PHNST concept.
